School-in-a-Box Kit – UNICEF Specification
The School-in-a-Box is a key component of emergency response efforts, widely used in back-to-school initiatives around the world. This kit provides essential supplies for a teacher and up to 40 students, ensuring that children’s education can resume within the first 72 hours of an emergency.
In addition to basic school materials like exercise books, pencils, erasers, and scissors, the kit includes a wooden teaching clock, counting cubes, a wind-up/solar radio, and three laminated posters (alphabet, multiplication tables, and number charts). It is packaged in a lockable aluminum box, with the lid designed to serve as a blackboard when coated with the special paint provided. This allows teachers to set up temporary classrooms almost anywhere, guided by a locally developed curriculum and teaching guide.

The kit’s contents are culturally neutral and can be used worldwide. Localized products, such as books in local languages, toys, games, and musical instruments, are often added to complement the kit. Exercise books are designed without margins, making them suitable for both left-to-right and right-to-left writing systems.
